George III (1760-1820), Bank of england octagonal countermarked half-dollar, on Spanish Half-Dollar of Charles III 1776 JR, Potosi (ESC —; SC 25). Coin good fine, countermark fine (£200-250)

The octagonal countermarked Half-Dollars are not listed in ESC and are considered by some authorities to be all forgeries. However as Hailstone ponts out in Coincraft’s Standard Catalogue “opinions differ”; certainly the countermark on the present coin appears to be perfectly genuine.
