Germany, World war two,The Sinking of HMS Ark Royal, 1939, iron medal by Guido Goetz, Chamberlain centre, Churchill and Hore-Belisha either side, their initials below around and anchor and star of David, reverse Death holding flag inscribed “Ark Royal’, a plane above, 71mm (cf. Engstrom, The Medallic Portraits of Sir Winston Churchill 5). Extremely fine and very rare (£80-120)

The medals of Guido Goetz, the son of Karl Goetz, are far rarer than those of his father and appear very infrequently. HMS Ark Royal although attacked in 1939 did not in fact sink as a result. The star of David found by the initials of Hore-Belisha, a politician now mostly remebered for his famous “beacons”, underlines the strident anti-semiticic character of the German propaganda machine.
