France, World war one, Edith Cavell, an extremely large and impressive uniface circular plaque, by G. Prud’homme, in silvered bronze, bust of Edith Cavell in nurse’s uniform in profile facint left, legend around left, 200mm (BHM — ). Good extremely fine and very rare, not noted by Brown (£80-120)

Stuck in honour of the famous English nurse executed by the Germans in 1915 for helping stranded Allied soldiers. Georges-Henri Prud’homme (1873-1947), one of the most accomplished medallists of his generation, while not straying straying from orthodox techniques conveys in this masterly portrait a sense of courage, serenity and strength of character. It is ironic no memorial medals for Edith Cavell were made in England, France providing the only medallic records.
