M.M. London Gazette 16 July 1918.

‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field on the 26th day of March 1918, North East of Mailly Maillet. During the attack on the enemy position this man who was a battalion runner showed the greatest bravery in carrying out his duties. On the evening of the 26th March when an enemy counter attack was anticipated it was necessary for a message to be sent quickly from Battalion H.Q. to one of the forward companies. Pte. Howe, regardless of personal danger and taking advantage of no cover, carried the message with the utmost speed. He was subjected to heavy machine gun fire, but undeterred he went on and delivered his message. During the whole of the operations he showed the same disregard for his safety in finding his work’.
