Wallis Dowell was the son of Paymaster George Dowell, R.N. and brother of Lieutenant-Colonel George Dare Dowell, V.C., R.M.A. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1846; Lieutenant, 1853; Captain, 1858; Brevet Major, 1859; Lieutenant-Colonel, 1870; Colonel, 1877, and Major-General, 1878. Served in the Southai Campaign, 1855, and served in the supression of the Indian Mutiny at Lucknow, Baieilly, Sundeela, Jamoo and Burwah (despatches).

George Cecil Dowell was the son of Lieutenant-Colonel George Dare Dowell, V.C., Royal Marine Artillery (see lot xxxx). Commissioned in the Royal Artillery he served in the Burmese Expedition, 1885-86, then in the Hazara Expedition, 1888, where he was employed as Adjutant to the Commander of the Royal Artillery for part of the campaign. He then served in the Hazara Expedition of 1891 and the Isazai Expedition of 1892, in both of which he served as Adjutant to the Commander of the R.A. In the operations leading to the relief of Chitral he served as Adjutant to the R.A. Divisional Troops, and served in the passage of the Swat River. Serving in Aden, 1903-04, he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 17 February 1905) and received the brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel. Serving in the Great War he was six times mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 1 January 1916, 15 June 1916, 4 January 1917, 14 December 1917, 21 May 1918, and 7 July 1919), and was awarded the C.M.G. and French Croix de Guerre.
