Herschel Maurice Margoliouth was the oldest of the nine children of the Rev. George Margoliouth, who was born of Jewish parents in Russian Poland, was ordained in 1881, and was a learned Biblical and Oriental scholar at the British Museum. Herschel was born in Greenwich, Kent on 22 February 1887, he was educated at Rugby School (Head Boy) and was then senior classical scholar of Oriel College Oxford, whence he graduated with first classes in Moderations and in Greats.

On 16 September 1914, as a Student, aged 27 years 7 months, he attested for service in the 19th Service (2nd Public Schools) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. On 29 January 1915 he was discharged on being granted a commission in the 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment. With them, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 22 March 1916 and attained the rank of Captain. After the war he returned to academic life and was emeritus fellow of Oriel College. He died in 1959. Further biographical details and photocopied service records are sold with the lot.
