Jesse Handsley was born in Skegness, Lincolnshire, on 29 March 1876. A Baker by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in October 1891 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in November 1892. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in March 1894 when on Mersey; Able Seaman in April 1895 when on Galatea, and Petty Officer 1st Class in October 1904 ‘in recognition of his services with Discovery. Based at Pembroke at the start of the Great War, he served on the pre-dreadnought battleship Swiftsure from 13 May 1916. Petty Officer Handsley died of a gastric ulcer at Gibraltar Hospital on 3 June 1916 and was buried in the Gibraltar (North Front) Cemetery. Sold with copied service papers.
