Three: Major W. H. Clifford, Goorkha Rifles

William Henry Richard Clifford was born on 26 July 1883. His father W. H. Clifford was in the Burma Police. William Henry was educated at Dulwich College. Returning to Burma he joined the Burma Police in 1904 and was a member of the Rangoon Mounted Rifles, 1904-09. He was commissioned into the Indian Army Reserve of Officers on 16 October 1913 and became a 2nd Lieutenant with the 1st Battalion 2nd Goorkhas. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion in France/Flanders in November 1914. There he was posted as the Company Commander of “F” Company and saw his first major action at the attack to recapture Neuve Chapelle in March 1915. In November 1915 the battalion was withdrawn from the line and posted to Egypt and thence to India. Having been promoted to Lieutenant in October 1915, in March 1916 he was appointed Divisional Recruiting Officer for Hindustani Hindus in Lucknow. His attachment to the 2/2 Gookhas having ceased, he was promoted to Captain in October 1918 and in February 1919 was advanced to Temporary Major and posted as Recruiting Officer in Fyzabad. He was demobilized in 1921 but was re-employed in May 1928 as an I.A.R.O. and placed on the Miscellaneous Duties List (Recruiting).In October 1928 he attained the rank of Major in the I.A.R.O., finally leaving the Army in 1933.
