Pair: Private H. Hayman, Royal Scots Fusiliers, who died, 30 July 1916

1914-15 Star (17395 Pte., R. Sc. Fus.); Victory Medal 1914-19 (17395 Pte., R.S. Fus.); Memorial Plaque (Harry Hayman) extremely fine (3) £80-100

Harry Hayman was born in Bethnal Green, London. Living at Hackney, he enlisted at Shoreditch. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers, he is listed as having ‘died’ on 30 July 1916 in ‘Soldiers Died’; however, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. On 30 July 1916 the 2nd Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers were heavily involved in the capture of Guillemont and out of an attacking force of 750 they suffered 650 casualties, the majority being dead or missing. Withi this in mind it is a distinct possibility that Private Hayman was ‘killed’ rather than ‘died’ on that day.

Memoral Plaque in card envelope. Medals in original registered envelope addressed to ‘Mrs C. Hayman, 2 Kay Street, Hackney Road, London, E.2’. With copied research.
