Silvanus Ezeliel Gibbs was born in Stoke Damerel, Devon, in October 1839 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in early 1854. He served in the Baltic operations aboard the Calcutta, and in the China operations aboard the Sanspareil. Gibbs joined the ship’s company of the Aurora in November 1863 and went on to serve in her in Canadian waters during the Fenian Raid of 1866. He retired from the Royal Navy in the mid-1870’s.
