Edward Sibley was born in Kilsby, Northamptonshire in November 1840 and, after working at a local mill, joined the Royal Navy at Plymouth in 1864, aged 23 years. Advanced to Yeoman of the Stores in August 1874, he served in a similar capacity in H.M.S. Penelope (May 1882 to July 1884) and was pensioned ashore on his return to the U.K. in the latter month. Post-navy, he worked for a firm in Northampton for 18 years, and latterly as the caretaker of St. Peter’s School, and he died there in January 1924; sold with a file of research, including copied service record, birth & death certificates, and a feature from the Northampton Independent, 21 February 1914, which includes a photograph of Sibley in his naval uniform.
