Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 1 clasp, Alexandria 11th July (W. Peek (sic), Qr. Mr., H.M.S. Penelope) edge bruising and contact marks, very fine £130-150

Four men in this rate on Penelope’s roll, the recipient correctly being listed under the surname ‘Peck’.

William Tongate Peck was born at Theberton, Suffolk, in January 1849, his birth certificate listing his mother as ‘Mahala Peck’, but without any details of his father - the latter was, in fact, William Tongate (accompanying research and photographs of local gravestones confirm). Young William entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in February 1865 and was a Quater Master - rating as a Petty Officer 1st Class - by the time of his service in H.M.S. Penelope (February 1882 to November 1883). He was pensioned ashore in the same rate in April 1888; sold with a file of research, including copied service record.
