Charles York was born in and lived at Blackheath, London and was educated at Halstow Road Council School, East Greenwich, and Greenwich Central School, Catherine Grove. A member of the Sunfields Mission Church, he was the chairman of the first junior missionary meeting. He enlisted into the 20th Battalion London Regiment at Blackheath. Serving with them he was killed in action by a shell on 10 January 1916. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. Sold with copied extract from The Kentish Mercury.
