William Wright was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire. A Groom by occupation and a member of the 3rd Hampshire Regiment (Militia), he attested for the Hampshire Regiment at Winchester on 1 November 1883, aged 18 years, 3 months. With the 1st Battalion, he served in Malta, July 1884-January 1886, and India, January 1886-April 1891. He was discharged on 31 October 1895. On 1 April 1896 he enlisted in the Army Reserve for four years. Called up for service in the Boer War, he served in the 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment and 7th Mounted Infantry Regiment.
