M.C. London Gazette 24 September 1918. ‘T./Capt., Hamps. R.’ ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy attack. He brought up on horseback, under heavy fire, supplies of ammunition to the front line. Later, he helped to reorganise the line when it fell back, and his determined example contributed greatly to beating off attacks by numerically strong enemy forces until nightfall’.

Philip Archibald Ledward was born in Withington, Lancashire, on 6 May 1891 and educated at Rugby School and Christ Church, Oxford. Having served in Rugby School O.T.C. and as a Lance-Corporal in the 2nd Reserve Battalion Honourable Artillery Company, he was appointed to a commission with the 9th Battalion Hampshire Regiment in February 1915. Serving with them he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Military Cross for services in the latter part of the war. He was invalided to England in October 1918 due to a gunshot wound. Sold with a quantity of copied service papers together copied m.i.c. and gazette extracts.
