Richard Davies Gale was born on 19 May 1929, the son of Major H. D. Gale, D.S.O., M.C., late R.A. Educated at Cheltenham College, 1942-46, he left in December 1946 and joined the ranks of the Royal Artillery. After 1 year 257 days in the ranks he then went to the R.M.A. Sandhurst and in December 1948 was given a regular commission in the Royal Artillery, being promoted to Lieutenant in December 1950, Temporary Captain in July 1953 and Captain in May 1955. In the Army List 1955 he is listed as an ‘A.O.P.’ (Air Observation Pilot) in FARELF. Captain Gale retired from the Army on 9 June 1958.
