Leonard Arman William Combie was born on 30 September 1908. He was commissioned into the R.A. (T.A.) in February 1936 - becoming a 2nd Lieutenant in the 330th Battery, 83rd (Welsh) Brigade R.A. (T.A.), based at Cross Keys, Monmouthshire. Promoted Lieutenant in this unit in February 1939. Mobilized for war in August 1939, he became an Acting Captain in 1939; Temporary Captain during 1939-45; Captain in 1945, and Acting Major during 1945-46. On the Unemployed List, 1946-48, then to a regular commission in January 1948 as a Major in the R.A. Served in the early part of the Emergency in Malaya, then retired with a gratuity on 2 August 1952.
