Kenneth Owen Cahill Le Clus was born in Bloemfontein on 20 May 1910. A Telegraphist by occupation, he volunteered for the Union Defence Force and was attested on 23 July 1940. Le Clus was attested for the 52nd Company, E.R. Battalion, Miners Engineer Brigade, South African Engineer Corps. On 29 July 1942, Le Clus was attested for full-time service and served in the South African Artillery. He served in Egypt with te 23rd Field Regiment, S.A.A., from 30 April 1943, and in the C.M.F. in Italy from 14 April 1944. He returned to South Africa in December 1945 and was discharged on 26 January 1946 as a Sergeant on partial demobilization. On returnig to South Africa, Le Clus continued to serve in the Union Defence Force. He was commissioned and later attained the rank of Major. He served with the 2nd L.A.A. Regiment which was part of the South African Corps of Marines. As a Major in the Corps of Marines he was awarded the John Chard Decoration (Government Gazette 28 October 1955).
