John Hogbin was born in Aldingham, Ashford, Kent on 15 February 1871. A Musician by occupation, he enlisted for the East Lancashire Regiment at Canterbury on 23 August 1886, aged 15 years, 9 months. With the 1st battalion he served in India, January 1887-February 1896 and Burma, February 1896-December 1897, serving in the Relief of Chitral Expedition for which he received the medal and clasp. He was discharged at Portsmouth on 8 July 1899. In 1903 he was attested at Stratford for a Short Service engagement in the Royal Garrison Regiment. With them he served in Halifax, Nova Scotia, November 1903-October 1905. He was discharged at Halifax on 14 October 1905. He enlisted again on 19 October 1905 into the Canadian Army (Permanent Force). In 1914 he was stationed in Bermuda, the same year he was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal (Canada Gazette 29 August 1914). During the Great War he served with the C.E.F., ranked as a Bandsman, from 23 August 1915 until discharged in 1916. He was with the R.C.R. and served at Shorncliffe, East Sandling, Folkestone and Shoreham in the U.K. For his services he was awarded the British War Medal. Returning to Canada he was discharged from the C.E.F. in Quebec on 21 November 1916. He re-enlisted in the C.E.F. on 16 August 1918 but did not serve overseas again, and was finally discharged in Halifax, N.S., on 27 March 1920. His proposed residence after discharge was 3286 Pine Street, Victoria, British Columbia.
