John Edward Rapley was born in Mile End, Middlesex on 1 October 1872. A Printer by occupation, he attested for the 11th Hussars on 3 May 1892. With them he served in India, January 1893-October 1899 and in Egypt, October 1899-October 1902. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in May 1903 and discharged in 1908. After leaving the Army, Rapley joined the Royal Mews in London and served as a Storeman. In 1930 he was awarded the Royal Household Faithful Service Medal. Sold with a group photograph of the Staff of the Royal Mews, 1930, which includes Rapley and copied attestation papers and other research.
