Alexander George Hillman originally served in the Hampshire Regiment. In 1937 as a Staff Sergeant on the Indian Unattached List, serving with the I.A.O.C., he was awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. Medal, this notified in I.A.O. 922 of October 1937. Hillman was appointed an Assistant Commissary with the rank of Lieutenant on 19 January 1942. He was promoted to Substantive Captain on 16 December 1943. He continued to serve with the Indian Army after Independence in 1947, and in July 1948 was promoted to Acting Lieutenant-Colonel.
