Reginald Foulkes Cottrell was born on 23 April 1885. Educated privately and at the R.M.A. Sandhurst, he was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in July 1903 and retired in January 1907. He rejoined the Army on 5 August 1914. He served in France/Flanders, 29 September 1914-10 June 1915 and 21 September-30 November 1915. From 14 December 1915 to the end of the war he served in Greek Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, European Turkey and the Islands of the Ægean Sea. Cottrell was adjutant of 8 Brigade R.G.A., 27 April-10 June 1915. He commanded the Artillery School at Salonika, 27 January-30 April 1918(as a Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel) and was Brigade Commander, R.F.A., 22 Division, from 1 May 1918. For his wartime services he received the brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel (London Gazette 1 January 1919), was twice mentioned in despatches and was awarded the D.S.O. and two Greek awards.
