Frank Compton Dare was born in Bridgend, Glamorgan, on 19 May 1867 and educated at the United Westminster School. Employed as a Bank Clerk and latterly as a Bank Manager, he was posted to banks in various parts of the country. This is reflected in his service in the Volunteer and Territorial Forces. His service records show him serving with the 2nd V.B. Welsh Regiment as a Private, January 1885-November 1889; 1st Monmouth Volunteer Artillery as a Quartermaster Sergeant, November 1889-February 1897; 3rd V.B. South Wales Borderers, as 2nd Lieutenant, August 1899-July 1900; as Lieutenant, July 1900-August 1901; as Captain, August 1901-March 1906; 2nd West Yorkshire Royal Engineer Volunteers, as Captain and Quartermaster, September 1907-March 1908. He was awarded the Volunteer Long Service Medal by Army Order August 1909 (believed to be the only officer of the unit to receive a E.VII.R. medal). He was awarded the T.D. (London Gazette 4 December 1917) when serving as Captain & Quartermaster in the 9th Cyclist Battalion Hampshire Regiment. During the Great War he was advanced to the rank of Major. In The Hampshire Regimental Journal, March 1917, he is listed as a Captain in the 9th Battalion as having been brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for War, for valuable services rendered in connection with the war. He retired from the Territorial Force, retaining the rank of Major (London Gazette 3 June 1921), having attained the age limit. Sold with a quantity of copied service papers and gazette extracts.
