Benjamin Fuller was born at Tilley, near Lynn, Norfolk in November 1854 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 1st Class in November 1872. He was subsequently employed in the Ashantee operations as an Ordinary Seaman aboard the Amethyst, from which ship he was invalided ashore in July 1878, having gained advancement to Able Seaman.
