Archie Wishart Gairdner was born in Edinburgh on 10 August 1846, son of General Gairdner, C.B., Indian Army. He passed the examination to enter Sandhurst on a Queen’s India Cadetship in August 1863, and was appointed Ensign 109th Foot on 13 November 1864, becoming Lieutenant, Bengal Staff Corps, 27th Bengal N.I., 22 January 1868. After participating in the Looshai Expedition of 1871-72, he was appointed 2nd Wing Subaltern and Adjutant of the regiment, firstly at Barrackpore in 1873, and then at Nowshera, where he died on 8 July 1874.
