16 officers and 517 other ranks served with the New South Wales Infantry as part of the N.S.W. Contingent in Egypt during the Suakin 1885 operations.

William Knott was born at Plymouth, Devon, and was aged 32 when he enlisted for service with the New South Wales Contingent to the Soudan on 18 February 1885, having previously served with 4th Company, 2nd Regiment of N.S.W. Infantry. He embarked at Sydney on 3 March 1885, per transport Iberia, and disembarked in the Soudan on 29 March. He was attached to the Guards Brigade from 2 April and marched to New Tamaai, where there was a brief action, Tofrik and back to Suakin. He was with the Camel Corps at Handoub for training from 16 April and embarked at Suakin on 18 May, arriving at Sydney on 12 June and to typhoid quarantine. He disembarked at Sydney on 23 June 1885 and was discharged. Sold with copy of medal roll entry and other research.
