4 officers and 89 men of the Royal Marines were present at the battle of Abu Klea.

Joseph Mees was born at Frome, Somerset, and enlisted at Cardiff on 23 September 1875, aged 18 years 9 months. He served with 31 Company, Plymouth Division (ADM 158/249).
