D.C.M. London Gazette 14 March 1916:

‘For conspicuous gallantry and ability since the commencement of the campaign. He has frequently laid and maintained telephone wires in circumstances entailing great danger.’

James R. Caldwell first entered the French theatre of war as a Corporal in 5th Signal Company, R.E. in mid-August 1914 and, having won the D.C.M., transferred to the Royal Corps of Signals.
