M.C. London Gazette 19 November 1917. ‘T/2nd Lt. attd. Rif. Brig.’ ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. He took command of his company when all the other officers were casualties and organised them under heavy machine-gun and rifle fire, sending back most valuable information. Later, in another attack, he led his company to the objective, successfully consolidated it, and repulsed a counter-attack. Throughout the operations he showed the greatest detirmination and initiative’.

Bar to M.C.
London Gazette 18 February 1918. ‘T/2nd Lt. (A/Capt), M.C., Rif. Brig.’ ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At the outset of an enemy counter-attack, in which the line on the left of his company was penetrated, the enemy getting to his rear, he was severely wounded. Notwithstanding this, he held his ground for twelve hours against repeated attacks from front and flank, and inflicted severe losses on the enemy. His splendid courage and example greatly contributed to restrict the break through to a narrow front’.
