Ian Campbell McLean was born in Bulawayo in January 1915 and enlisted in the Southern Rhodesia Forces in November 1939. Embarked for the Middle East in 1941, he served in the Southern Rhodesia Armoured Car Regiment until transferring, in December 1942, to the Union Defence Force, in which latter capacity he was attached to the South African Armoured Corps (Tanks), and saw further action in Italy. McLean returned to South Africa in July 1945, thence to Bulawayo and was discharged that September, all but his Africa Service Medal being issued unnamed by the Rhodesian authorities; sold with copied service records.
