Archibald James Ulyett was mentioned in despatches while serving as a Petty Officer (Gunner’s Mate) in the destroyer H.M.S. Tenacious, following a running battle with E and R Boats off Albania on 20 May 1944 (London Gazette 5 September 1944 refers). The original recommendation states:

‘H.M.S.
Tenacious, in company with H.M.S. Termagant, encountered two forces of enemy E and R Boats at 0145 hours on 20 May 1944, off the Albanian coast. In the ensuing action one boat is claimed to have been sunk, one set on fire and driven ashore or sunk, and one other hit and damaged. Petty Officer Ulyett is primarily responsible for the gunnery training. The good training which control team and guns’ crews had received produced results in this action against a difficult target. In this as in previous actions, Petty Officer Ulyett displayed coolness and efficiency in charge of the T.S. and set an excellent example.’

Ulyett was commissioned as a Gunner, R.N. in May 1945 and gained advancement to Senior Commissioned Gunner in October 1953, while serving in H.M.S.
Warrior, aboard which aircraft carrier he won entitlement to his Korea Medal.
