Alfred James Frank Read, a native of Enfield, was born in January 1881, and served in the ranks for 14 years and as a Warrant Officer Class 1 for eight years, in which latter period he was attached to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from January to November 1918, and was awarded his M.S.M., ‘in recognition of valuable service rendered with the Forces in Egypt’ (London Gazette 3 June 1919 refers). Commissioned as a Lieutenant & Quarter-Master in July 1923, he was given the Brevet of Major in July 1934 and was awarded the Jubilee Medal in the following year (official roll confirms).
