Cecil Henry Coates was born in Walsall in May 1899 and enlisted in the Royal Naval Air Service in September 1917. Transferring to the Royal Flying Corps later that month, he went on to witness active service in Italy from May 1918 until the end of the War, firstly in 67 Wing and latterly, from October of that year, in 226 Squadron. Returning to the home establishment in March 1919, he was transferred to the R.A.F. Reserve in the following month.
