Dudley Bennett Michell was born on 17 March 1897, and commissioned into the Royal Artillery on 21 September 1917, having completed nearly two years mobilised service with the Special Reserve and having served in France and Belgium from 16 August to 15 September 1916 and from 9 May 1917 until the end of the war. He served with the Royal West African Frontier Force from August 1927 to July 1929, and was later posted to the School of A.A. Defence at Biggin Hill. Promoted to Major in August 1938, he retired from the Army in November 1947 as a Major (Hon. Lieutenant-Colonel). He was awarded the Civil Defence L.S. Medal, in January 1966, for 15 years service in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Colonel Michell died on 24 February 1976, aged 78.
