James William Morrison, was the son of James and Marion Morrison of Edinburgh. He attended George Watson’s College, Edinburgh, 1897-1901, and afterwards served his apprenticeship as a quantity surveyor and qualified as a land surveyor. In 1915 he enlisted as an Ordinary Seaman in the Royal Naval Division. Gaining a commissioned, he was posted to Gallipoli, promoted and posted to the command of a company. After the evacuation the Hood Battalion was posted to France, where he was mentioned in despatches for his gallantry before Beaumont Hamel (London Gazette 15 May 1917), and recommended for promotion. After the capture of Gaverelle by his battalion, he was mortally wounded on 23 April 1917. Having no known grave, his name was commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
