Thomas Henry Kernick was born in Dawlish, Devon, on 24 December 1882. A Butcher by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 27 February 1900 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in May the same year. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman whilst on the Niobe in December 1900 and Able Seaman when on the Thistle in January 1903. He was posted to the battlecruiser Lion in April 1913 and was promoted to Leading Seaman aboard the ship in May 1914 and Petty Officer in January 1917. He served throughout the war on the Lion which was the flagship of Vice-Admiral David Beatty and lead ship of the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron, latterly flagship of the Battle Cruiser Force. As such he was present at the battles of Heligoland Bight, 28 August 1914; Dogger Bank, 24 January 1915, and Jutland, 31 May/1 June 1916, the ship taking heavy damage in the latter two actions. Petty Officer Kernick was Pensioned Ashore on 23 December 1922. Sold with copied service paper.
