Horace Alfred Butler was born in Bermondsey, London in October 1881 and entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class in May 1904. Having then served at sea and ashore, including Hong Kong, in the interim, he was recommended for a commission in September 1913, and was appointed an Acting Mate (E.) in April 1915. Butler subsequently joined the cruiser H.M.S. Cordelia in April 1916, aboard which ship he remained actively employed until the end of hostilities, was present at Jutland, and advanced to Engineer Lieutenant in April 1917; sold with copied service record (to 1913).
