John Thomas Howarth was born in the village of Milnrow, near Rochdale, Lancashire, on 15 April 1870. He enlisted into the Lancashire Fusiliers at Rochdale on 22 December 1891, aged 21 years, 9 months. With the 2nd Battalion he served in India, November 1892-January 1898; Egypt and Sudan, January-October 1898; and Malta, October 1898-September 1899. He was briefly transferred to the Army Reserve in September 1899, only to be recalled to the colours in November. With the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers he then served in South Africa, December 1899-August 1902. Transferred to the Army Reserve in April 1903, he was fully discharged in December that year. Sold with copied service papers, birth and marriage certificates and census extracts.
