Nevil Bursey Hodgson was the eldest son of Nevil L. Hodgson of Woolwich and Blackheath. He served as a Private in the Cape Police of No.2 District in the Bechuanaland campaign, 1896-97. In the Second Boer War during the siege of Mafeking he served as a local Sergeant-Major in the Cape Police and was seconded to the Army Service Corps. He was mentioned in despatches by Baden-Powell on 18 May 1900 as follows: ‘Trooper (Local Sergeant-Major) Hodgson acted as Sergeant-Major to A.S.C., and was of the greatest help to Captain Ryan’. Captain Ryan was the D.A.A.G. in charge of supplies. On the recommendation of the C-in-C in South Africa, he was gazetted a 2nd Lieutenant in the A.S.C. on 15 September 1900 and promoted Lieutenant on 1 November 1901. Lieutenant Hodgson died of enteric at Pretoria on 27 May 1902. Sold with copied research.
