James Fitzgerald was born in November 1846 at Dundee, Forfar. He was a bleacher by trade and enlisted into the 92nd Highlanders on 16 November 1865, aged 19 years. He served overseas in India from January 1868 to March 1879; in Afghanistan from March 1879 to October 1880; and in the Cape Colony, including the First Boer war, from October 1880 to the end of January 1882. He was invalided at Edinburgh on 12 March 1884 with chronic rheumatism, and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in that same year.
