Fusrs.); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (2366 Sjt., 1st Btn. 23rd Regt.); France, Second Empire, Medaille Militaire, silver, silver-gilt and enamel, enamel damage; Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue (2366 R.W.F.) engraved naming, fitted with a ‘British Crimea’ style suspension, each with ornate silver mounting bar, contact marks, very fine (5) £1400-1600

William Parkinson was born in Westham, Lancashire. A Watchmaker by occupation, he enlisted into the 67th Regiment on 18 February 1840. He transferred to the 23rd Regiment on 1 June 1842 and was advanced to Serjeant in July 1854. He was awarded the French Medaille Militaire for having, ‘Served with gallantry at Alma and was zealous in his duties throughout the seige in the trenches’. He was severely wounded in the leg in the final attack on the Redan, 8 September 1855. As a Colour Serjeant he was discharged as unfit for further service on 26 April 1864.
