Four: Captain J. Briggs, Military Train, late 9th Regiment

John Briggs was born in Ireland on 31 April 1830 and entered the Army as a Private in the 26th Regiment on 10 February 1846; transferring to the 9th Regiment in December the same year. He attained the rank of Sergeant-Major in January 1854. With the 9th Regiment he served in the Crimea from November 1854, and saw action at the siege of Sebastopol and the capture of the cemetery and suburbs under General Eyre. He was commissioned a Cornet and Adjutant in January 1856, and an Ensign in the Military Train in February 1857, advanced to Lieutenant in March 1858. Serving as a Lieutenant with the Military Train he served in the supression of the Indian Mutiny, including the relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde, the occupation of Alumbagh under Outram, and the capture of Lucknow. Also at the relief of Azimghur and capture of Jugdispore. He then served in the operations in North China in 1860. Briggs was promoted to an unattached Captaincy in March 1862.
