John Dalton was born of British parents in Dresden, Germany, on 17 May 1890. He was educated at Elstow College, Bedford and a college in Switzerland, qualifying as an Analytical Chemist. On 22 October 1912 he enlisted as a Private in the 28th Battalion London Regiment, his address at the time being 10 Heathfield Road, Acton. Mobilized with his unit on the outbreak of war, he joined the B.E.F. in France on 26 October 1914. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment in March 1917. Serving in France, he was advanced to Acting Captain in October 1917 but was evacuated to England in the following month suffering from ‘Trench Foot’. For his services he was awarded the Military Cross (London Gazette 17 December 1917). Deemed unfit for further overseas service, he was attached to the Royal Army Medical College’s Hygiene Department from 15 April 1918. He was released from military service on 29 May 1919, and in mid-June his address was given as ‘81 Clarendon Road, Putney, London’. He finally relinquished his commission whilst retaining the rank of Captain on 1 September 1922. Moving to Shanghai, Dalton was enrolled in the Shanghai Volunteer Corps in March 1920. He served as a Lieutenant in “A” Company until 1930, and again from 1934. Serving during the 1937 ‘Emergency’ and at the time of the Japanese invasion, he was interned when the international settlement was overrun. On his release he returned to England. Sold with copied service details.
