23rd Foot Medal 1779, engraved, obverse, a seated Britannia presenting a wreath to a soldier knelt before her, with a large stamp mark bearing the letters, ‘W & PC’, reverse, inscribed, ‘Lieut. Col. Wm. Blakeney 23rd Foot Charlston (sic) 1779’, 39mm., silver, good very fine £200-240

William Blakeney was born in 1735. He was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 26 August 1756, on transfer from the 27th Foot, and was advanced to Lieutenant in September 1757. He was wounded during the attack on Marsall de Castrie’s French force holding the convent at Rheinberg, on 16 October 1760. He was promoted to Captain in October 1762 and a Major in November 1775. He sailed for America with the regiment in 1773. On 17 June 1775 he was wounded while commanding his grenadier company at the battle of Bunker Hill. Granted the brevet rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 30 January 1778, he retired on 23 April 1779. Sold with copied research.
