Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 5 clasps, Tel-El-Kebir, Suakin 1884, El-Teb-Tamaai, The Nile 1884-85, Kirbekan (295 Pte. J. Duncan, 1/R. Hrs.) slight contact marks, very fine £700-800

James Duncan was born in Edinburgh. A Paper Maker by occupation, he attested for the Black Watch on 21 September 1881, aged 19 years. Posted to the 1st Battalion, he served in Egypt, August 1882-April 1886; Malta, May 1886-August 1889, and Gibraltar, August-October 1889. After going through the campaigns in Egypt and Sudan relatively unscathed, on 22 May 1886, whilst employed on ‘police duties’ in Salvatore, Malta, Duncan in pursuit of a boy who was thowing stones from a roof, suffered fractures and other injuries in a fall. Duncan was transferred to the Army Reserve in October 1889 and discharged on 26 September 1893. Sold with copied roll extract and service papers, including those of the Court of Inquiry into the injuries suffered by Duncan in Malta.
