William Burrell was born in January 1837 at Sheerness, Kent. He entered the Royal Navy on 11 September 1851, aged 14 years 6 months for 10 years Continuous Service. He served aboard H.M.S. Boscawen from September 1851 to July 1852; Meander to May 1854; and Algiers, as Boy 1st Class, to February 1856, during which time he saw service in the Crimea.
