Thomas James was born in Kemerton, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire on 25 June 1783. He was sent to the 3rd Foot at Chatham, Kent, “being a deserter” from the “Supplementary Local Militia List” on 14 June 1804. At the time of his ‘enlistment’ he was nearly 21 years of age and Labourer by occupation. With the 3rd Foot James served in Portugal, Spain, France and Lower Canada. He was invalided to England on 24 October 1816 and discharged on 14 November 1816 due to being asthmatic.
