An 1887 pattern solid-patent tang cavalry sword for an officer of the 12th. Prince of Wales’s Own Lancers, who was later to win a DSO whilst serving with the RFC during The Great War, the 89cm blade by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, No. 32346 for 1893, etched with crowned VR cypher foliate scrolls and strapwork, regimental device and crossed lances, XII Prince of Wales’s Own Lancers, and within a cartouche at the forte the owners crests, regulation steel pierced guard, chequered pommel and backstrap, vulcanised grip bound with silver wire, complete with its steel scabbard, otherwise good condition overall £450-500

The sword of Ralph Charles Donaldson-Hudson, born 20 February 1874, the son of Charles Donaldson-Hudson MP, of Cheswarden Hall, Salop, educated at Eton and the RMA Sandhurst, commissioned into the 12th. Lancers in 1893 retiring in 1897, he was later commissioned into the Shropshire Yeomanry serving 1901-1910, during The Great War he served with the RFC and RAF and was awarded the DSO in 1917, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel, he died in 1941.

The Wilkinson proof books record sword No. 32346 for R C D Hudson, October 30th. 1893.
