An unusual 1827 pattern solid-patent tang presentation sword for an officer of The Rifle Brigade, the straight 83cm dumbell section blade by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, No. 39005 for 1901, etched with crowned EVIIR cypher, royal arms, strung bugle, panels of foliate scrolls etc, and within a cartouche at the forte a family crest and a presentation inscription, ‘From General Lord Chesham, March 1905’, regulation plated steel guard incorporating wreathed strung bugle, chequered backstrap, vulcanised grip bound with silver wire, complete with its steel scabbard, good condition overall and blade retaining almost all original finish £350-400

The sword of Sir Ralph George Campbell Glyn, M.C., (First and last Baron Glyn), born 3 March 1884, son of Edward Carr Glyn, Bishop of Peterborough and Chaplain to Queen Victoria. Educated at Harrow and the R.M.A. Sandhurst, commissioned into the Rifle Brigade in 1905, resigning his commission in 1910 he rejoined his regiment in 1914 and later served on the Staff, awarded the M.C. in 1918 and was three times mentioned, retiring in 1919. He was later a D.L., High Steward of Wallingford, P.P.S. to the Prime Minister 1931-1935, M.P. for Stirlingshire & Clackmannanshire 1918-1922 and for Abingdon 1924-1953, etc., he died at Wantage in 1960.

The Wilkinson proof books record sword No. 39005 ‘a special’ for R G C Glyn, June 1901.
