A fine silver mounted Victorian officer’s presentation sword of the West Riding of Yorkshire Volunteer Artillery, the slightly curved 84cm blade by Reeves, Toledo Works, Birmingham, finely etched for its entire length with crowned VR cypher, stands of arms, crowned sword and mace etc, all surrounded by intricate foliate patterns and within a central panel a presentation inscription ‘Presented to Adjutant Fred. Page 1st. Adm. Brigade W. R. of Yorkshire Arty. Vols. for carbine shooting, December 7th. 1867, by Mrs. Colonel Firth’ on either side of the panel appear a field gun and sprays of laurel leaves, ornate silver half-basket guard cast and chased with entwined foliate patterns within a beaded border, silver backstrap and pommel cast and chased with oak leaves and a classical helmet, fish-skin covered grip bound with copper wire, complete with its silver plated steel scabbard and silver bullion sword-knot, in fine condition throughout the blade retaining all original finish £1000-1200

Frederick Page was appointed Adjutant to the 1st. Administrative Brigade Yorkshire (West Riding) Artillery Volunteers, 20 May 1867, subsequently promoted to Captain he appears to have been succeeded in December 1875 and disappears from the Army List.

Mrs. Colonel Firth would have been Ada Firth wife of Lt. Col. Sir Charles Henry Firth commanding the brigade, who he had married in 1862.
